If you are starting out with goals of working on commercials, or in TV or Film, then a good place to start is on the set as a Background Artist. You’ll receive a paycheck and you’ll learn what is expected from you as a professional performer from registration until you are wrapped.

If you are a performer who often has lines on set or on stage, but you haven’t quite yet made your health insurance minimums, then you too just might want to consider working as a background performer.

Either way, as a newbie to the Industry or an experienced professional, it’s important to be a professional from the start and remember you never know who you are going to work alongside and what the potential of future collaborations with them might be.

Is the 2nd A.D. that you check-in with an aspiring director with a great short film script that he is on the verge of producing?

Is the director an award winning one who you can learn from by taking his direction while on set?

Is the casting director or calling service that you register with currently casting a series of commercials where you could with a day or two of work easily cinch your health insurance minimum?

Let’s be real, working as a background performer deserves respect when you treat your time registering, preparing for your booking, working on set and following up with the utmost of professionalism. So, equip yourself with your Background Artists’ Holdon Log logbook or into your PerformerTrack account and take heed to this series of articles Making the Most Out of Being a Background Artist and you will no doubt maximize your opportunities!

Be Professional from the First Impression!
Background & Calling Service Registration Tips

When you are looking for work as a background performer it's important to act as a professional from the moment you register with a Background Casting Company or Calling Service.

Conveniently, in the back of the Background Artists' Holdon Log you'll find a listing of the Background Registration Companies which are organized alphabetically state-by-state and then by region. If there are a lot of listings for one state then we break it down by region (i.e.- California is broken down to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego). We also have many listings in Canada.

Within each Background Casting Company or Calling Service listing are nuggets of valuable information that, if used correctly, can help you make a positive first impression with these Industry pros!

Give Them What They Want

Before you go and register you should know whether they see performers in person or if they just accept photos via mail or e-mail.

If they only see people via mailed-in submissions, make sure that you send them what they ask for.  If they ask for headshots, make sure your resumes are trimmed down and attached. If they ask for 3x5 photos where you have a white wall in the background and a black top on, then ONLY submit what they specify. Most likely they are doing this to bring uniformity to the talent they represent.

Who Are You?

Make sure all of your photos are labeled on the back with your name, Union affiliation(s) and two phone numbers that you can always be reached at. Unmarked photos will end up in the trash. Here’s a real-world scenario:

CASTING DIRECTOR:

(while looking at a photo with
no name and no contact numbers)

“Who is this performer?”

CASTING ASSISTANT:

“It’s Andrew Jones, he’d be perfect for this 4-day commercial shoot, but there’s no phone number on his photos…should I search Google for his number? Or, should we just go with Bill Smith, he’s the second choice and I have his number right here on the back of his picture?”

CASTING DIRECTOR:

“Let’s go with Bill! We simply do not have time to find Andy. We gotta call production and give an answer in 15 minutes.”

What this means is that if Andrew Jones is SAG he just lost out on 4 days at $309.50/8 hours. That a $1238 mistake. Don’t be an Andrew Jones!

Labeling E-Mail Pics

The same goes with properly labeling your e-mailed photos. As more and more Background Casting Companies and Calling Services are using the Internet to submit pictures to production, make sure that when you email your photos over that the attachment includes your name (i.e. – “AJonesSuit.jpg”, or “BSmithCommerical.jpg”).

Don’t make the casting director hunt through pictures of “Smiley.jpg”, “Running.jpg” or “Swimsuit.jpg”. Use your first initial and last name within the name of the image. Always be consistent.
